PWCS Military Connected Resources

TNS Reading

Our Reading Specialists supports classroom teacher with their literacy instruction by providing resources and helping in the classrooms. They also provide additional support to students identified as at-risk readers through the RTI model. They also oversee the PALs tutors who provide reading support in small groups to students.

At The Nokesville School we provide a program of language instruction in a supportive settings so that ELs (English Learners) attain proficiency in English and meet the same challenging academic content and student achievement standards as other students.

TNS Special Education Staff

PWCS provides many supports and services to students with special needs and their families. For more information on disability programs and related services, inclusive practices, and program supports, visit the Special Education Department webpage. Specifically, the Special Education Program’s Procedural Support and Guidance Manual which provides guidance on the special education processes under the IDEA and its implementing regulations, as well as applicable Virginia law and state regulations. In addition, this manual clarifies pertinent requirements of Section 504, as amended, and Title II of the ADA for students with disabilities in public schools.

The Interstate Military Compact addresses special education services for military students.

  • The receiving state shall initially provide comparable services to a student with disabilities based on his/her current Individualized Education Program (IEP); and
  • The receiving state shall make reasonable accommodations and modifications to address the needs of incoming students with disabilities, subject to an existing 504 or Title II Plans, to provide the student with education access to education; and
  • The receiving school may perform subsequent evaluations to ensure appropriate placement and appropriate services.

  • Parent Resource Center - In operation since November 1992, the PWCS Office of Special Education Parent Resource Center's mission is to assist parents and families of children with disabilities to become active participants in their child's education. Its goal is to promote a positive relationship between parents and educators.
  • Special Education Advisory Committee - The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is organized and functions following state and federal requirements. The Committee's functions include the following:
    • Monthly meetings with the Directors of the Special Education Department
    • Determining the needs of children with disabilities within the county
    • Developing priorities and strategies for meeting identified needs of children with disabilities
  • Prepare and submit an annual report to the Prince William County School Board
